My name is Matthew Siemiatkaska. I am a sophomore at the University of Memphis majoring in Sports Management. College is a continuation of the education I received in high school. My first semester of college I had the HOPE scholarship, I was getting $15,000 per year in aid (from several different venues of financial aid) but my grades were not up to par and I lost my financial aid. Then, I was late turning in my financial aid documents last semester, and I ended up not getting my financial aid in time for school to start; I sat out the semester. My entire first year of college I displayed little self discipline and even less dedication to my work. I dug myself into an early hole, and this semester I am going to begin to undo all the atrocities from my first year. I cannot settle for anything less than an "A" in every class. It will be even tougher because I am working full-time to pay all my bills. In order for me to be successful this semester I have to utilize excellent time management, so I downloaded a calender on my computer and I keep track of all my due dates and class and work times on this calender. I can see any free time I have and what I am going to be doing with it. I realize that in order for me to fully succeed in my classes, I have to put in the hours outside of class. I also realize that with work it is going to be much harder than it should be, but all I have to do is be careful not to get behind and stay caught up on my readings.
Also, I have certain goals I would like to meet outside of school. I need to get my car situation sorted out. At the moment, the car I have will not pass inspection (it needs new tags by the end of February) and its not worth the price of getting it to the point where it can pass inspection, so I plan on parking the car and not driving it. However, I am also not capable of making a downpayment on a new car at the moment. I have to work out a solution that will enable me to purchase a car; one idea is that I may use my tax return as a downpayment. I also need to work out what I intend to do with my job situation. I would like to upgrade to a better job (right now I am a manager at BlueCoast Burrito) but I cant find the time to put the in the effort required to do that. Lastly, I have to become more responsible with my money. I touched on this earlier with the car situation, but I have to buckle down and start saving some money instead of spending it. If I can do all of this without making things worse, this semester will be a success.

About this blog:
This is the class blog for Wendy Sumner-Winter's 1020 Composition and Analysis classes at the University of Memphis.
The purpose of the blog is to demonstrate the global nature of education and argument and allow students to embrace the idea of entering into a global conversation.
The governing theme of this class will be "Think Globally, Act Locally." To that end, we will be exploring issues that face the world in the context of our own city.
We invite readers to participate in the discussion with us. Let us learn from you, let us teach you.
